What is Microneedling?

History Of Microneedling

Microneedling was introduced in 1905 by a German dermatologist named Ernst Kromayer, who used dental burs to treat birthmarks, hyperpigmentation, and scars. Current microneedling techniques were introduced in 1995 by a Philadelphia dermatologist named Dr. Desmond Fernandes, who treated scars and wrinkles through the use of hypodermic needles.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Also called collagen induction therapy, or CIT, today’s microneedling technique uses a cartridge with 12 micro-tips to abrade the skin in a process that takes between 30 and 90 minutes. The body’s healing mechanisms stimulate the production of elastin and collagen to repair the abraded area, which improves skin color, tone, and texture. It also reduces fine lines, pore size, scarring, stretch marks, and overall skin condition.

How Often Do I Need Microneedling?

Your need for microneedling will depend on your skin type, tone, and aesthetics. Some patients need a single visit annually, while others require two or three treatments every six to eight weeks. For deep scarring, such as from acne or stretch marks, it may take six to eight sessions every six weeks to achieve optimal results.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

Most patients see an immediate improvement in their skin tone, and progress can occur for up to six months. The degree and rate of improvement will depend on the intensity of the damage and the frequency of the treatments.

How Long Is The Recovery Period?

You may experience redness for two to four days, but it shouldn’t last longer than that. Some patients recover completely in 24 hours.

Is Microneedling Painful?

Some patients experience minor discomfort during the procedure, but the area is numbed first, so there shouldn’t be any pain. Typically, patients report that it feels like having sandpaper rubbed across the skin. Some patients report that it feels rather relaxing.

How Do I Maintain My Microneedling Results?

After your treatment, we’ll provide you with a kit that contains a hydrating moisturizer that also helps to tighten your skin and further reduce the fine lines and wrinkles of the aging process.

How Do I Know If I’m A Good Candidate?

Most people are good candidates for microneedling as long as they’re in good health and not pregnant. Some acne medications may contraindicate microneedling, so be sure to advise your dermatologist if you’re using any acne medications. Microneedling isn’t very invasive, so there’s no downtime except for the redness to dissipate.
